Up-and-coming American racer Matteo Jorgenson won cycling’s Paris-Nice on Sunday, when the eight-day tournament concluded on the Riviera seafront along the iconic Promenade des Anglais.
Jorgenson began the last day of racing over the mountainous Nice wilderness in second place to fellow American Brandon McNulty.
McNulty ran out of steam, but when Belgian Remco Evenepoel and Jorgenson broke away in the cold and rain on a mountainside, he was unable to follow. The 24-year-old Californian, who lives in Nice, let Evenepoel win the stage before celebrating his overall victory when he crossed the finish line just behind him. Jorgenson won by 30 seconds over Evenepoel, thanks in part to a tactical error by the Belgian on stage five, when he underestimated the American, allowing his attack to go undefended and losing almost one minute to him that day.
