Reece McKain of Benoni rallied from a three-shot deficit to win by one stroke and earn his first-ever Altron Big Easy Tour title at Waterkloof Golf Club. McKain fired a final-round 70 to finish 11-under-par.
Samuel Simpson of the Royal Cape Golf Club and Philip Geerts, who had led the match for the opening 36 holes, each made a strong push for the victory in the closing stages, setting off a stunning change of events.
Even though he would drop to finish fourth in Pretoria this week, Conner McKenzie was also competitive early in the round. McKain made a bogey on the first hole of his round, but he quickly bounced back with a birdie on the following hole.
But his happiness was short-lived since he missed another putt on the par-four fifth. Once more, McKain capitalised with a birdie on the fifth hole and didn’t miss another until the tenth, demonstrating mental toughness and perseverance. When he birdied holes 12 and 14, then closed with another birdie on the final, he was happy again.
