Nishad Kumar won the silver medal in the men’s T47 high jump at the World Para Athletics Championships 2024, giving India its first medal of the event. He cleared 1.99 meters. In the Tokyo Paralympics, the 24-year-old set a new Asian record with a 2.06-meter jump and won gold at the Asian Para Games last year.
Ravi Rongali secured a spot in the Paris Paralympics with a 9.75-meter throw in the men’s shot put F40 event, finishing sixth. Preethi Pal won bronze in the women’s 200-meter T35 race with a time of 30.49, earning India’s first-ever medal in a paratrack event at the Championships.
The World Para Athletics Championships, which started on May 17 and will run through May 26, feature about 1300 participants in various events. This is the 11th year of the competition and the first time it is being held in East Asia. So far, India has won two medals, compared to the ten medals they won at the previous Championships, which included three golds, four silvers, and three bronzes.
