Rohan Bopanna creates history with Miami Open men’s doubles title, breaks his own record

Breaking his own record from the previous year, Rohan Bopanna made history by winning the Miami Open men’s doubles championship. In a historic triumph, Australian Rohan Bopanna and Australian partner Matthew Ebden emerged victorious in the Miami Open men’s doubles final on Saturday. To win the title, the Indo-Australian team defeated American Austin Krajicek and Croatia’s Ivan Dodic 6-7 6-3 10-16. Bopanna, 44, broke his own record with the victory, making history as the oldest person to win an ATP Masters 1000 championship.

When he won the Indian Wells title the previous year, he broke the record. Additionally, he became the second Indian since Leander Paes to get to the nine ATP Masters 1000 finals. Bopanna and Ebden dropped the opening set 6-7 after a difficult start to the match. However, they maintained their composure and won 6-3 after mounting a comeback in the second set. They then won the tiebreaker in the third set, 10-6, when they were at their most dominant.

In the semifinal, Bopanna and Ebden had upset Marcel Granollers of Spain and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina, winning 6-1 6-4. They defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets, 7-6 7-5, in an exciting Melbourne final to become the current Australian Open champions. It was Bopanna’s first men’s doubles grand Slam victory and his second overall. His only other Grand Slam victory occurred in the French Open mixed doubles competition in 2017.

With the French Open starting on May 20, Bopanna-Ebden will be hoping to be at the top of her game. Although they will be the favorites to win the men’s doubles championship, they must be cautious of their rivals.

The two were at their lethal best in the Australian Open and Miami Open finals. In the latter case, they may have started out slowly, but once they got into the swing of things, they were unstoppable
