Stephens outlasts Linette on clay in Rouen

Sloane Stephens won the Rouen clay-court tournament on Sunday, defeating Magda Linette in the final set 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, to claim her first trophy in over two years.

It took the 31-year-old American, ranked No. 6, two hours and ten minutes to prevail in a match with changes of momentum.

For Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion and current 39th-ranked player in the world, it was her first championship since her victory in February 2022 in Guadalajara, Mexico, which also happened to be her final tour final appearance.

Stephens stormed into the opening set by breaking service three times after Linette held serve to start the match. In response, Linette broke in the second set’s third and fifth games.

Following several overtime games, Stephens won the championship match.
