Tadej Pogačar wins third Tour de France title

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar won the 2024 Tour de France with a dominant performance in the time trial stage.

Pogačar has become the first man in the 21st century to win both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the same season, achieving six individual stage victories along the way to his overall triumph. This marks his third Tour de France victory, following his wins in 2020 and 2021. He reclaimed the title from his rival Jonas Vingegaard, the champion of 2022 and 2023.

After three weeks of intense competition between Pogačar and Vingegaard, featuring historic moments and over 2,000 miles of racing, this year’s final stage made history by moving the finish from Paris’ Champs-Élysées to the Promenade des Anglais due to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The time trial covered a 21-mile route from Monaco to Nice, France, with rolling hills and an overall elevation gain of 695 meters—challenging but less steep compared to recent mountainous stages. Pogačar led rivals Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel at every checkpoint of today’s time trial.

This year was the first time since 1989 that the Tour de France ended with a time trial. Looking ahead, Pogačar said he will now focus on the World Road Championships in September, where he will compete against reigning World Champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands.
