Iga Swiatek becomes first woman in 15 years to record 65 wins in back-to-back seasonste

Iga Swiatek continued her winning streak at the WTA Finals, defeating US Open champion Coco Gauff 6-0, 7-5, after defeating Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (3), 6-0, two days earlier. She is currently 4-0 in sets and 2-0 in her round-robin group. She did, however, accomplish another extremely remarkable, larger-picture achievement with her triumph over Gauff: with her 65th win of 2023 and her 67 wins from 2022, she became the first woman to record 65 or more tour-level wins in consecutive seasons in 15 years.

The previous world champion Jelena Jankovic, who won 65 games in 2008 and 72 games in 2007, was the last woman to accomplish the feat.

Martina Hingis was the last woman to do so in 1999 and 2000. Just ahead of Daniil Medvedev (64), who lost his opening match in Paris this week, and Carlos Alcaraz (63), Swiatek is the first player, male or female, to reach 65 wins this year.

Up to 68 wins this year would be a new personal best for the world No. 2 in the rankings. She could play in three more matches around the corner with the round robin against Ons Jabeur after which she will potentially qualify for the semi-finals and finals which will allow her to make history.

With three straight wins over Jabeur, including a straight-set triumph in the 2022 US Open final, Swiatek has a 4-2 head-to-head record against him.
